The game

A co-designed game about cyborgs, sentient machines, and preferable technological futures

PLAY THE GAME

Welcome to the
Sm4rt c1ty

How can we explore visions of the future that are dynamic and pluralistic, instead of following the narrow narratives of Silicon Valley? What experiences of our technological present can help us shape a better technological future?

Algorithms of Late-capitalism: The Game is a board game that was made through a co-design process in which diverse groups of participants grappled with the complex realities of living in an algorithmic age, and imagined pathways towards more desirable alternative futures.

In this game, players become part of a community of cyborgs, trying to survive and thrive in a world ruled by the first Cult of Sentient Machines. Play the game and discover how you can create a better technological future by banding together and subverting the very rules of the game. Or turn on each other and conform to the imperious datafied demands of the Cult of Sentient Machines’ rule-bound regime.

PROMOTING ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES

The Algorithms of Late-capitalism: The Game project was created through a co-design process. We used board game co-design as a medium for bringing diverse groups of people together to explore imaginaries for more desirable technological futures.

As the design & research studio internet teapot, throughout 2021 we facilitaeted four co-design workshops to complete this project. Over the course of these four sessions, a total of 39 participants from different backgrounds, experiences, ages, genders, professions, cultures, and parts of the world came together to create this game. Each person brought something unique to the project, without which this game would not have come into existence.

The aim of the co-design workshops was to create a space and opportunity for diverse perspectives to engage in discussing the role digital technologies play in our lives and society at large. It is not only corporations, startup CEOs, and software engineers that should decide what our technological realities should be. As technology users, we all have experiential expertise to contribute to creating more desirable and inclusive technological futures.

Algorithms of Late-capitalism: The Game consequently represent a game through which players can explore a range of different ideas, visions for, and reflections on technology that can hopefully provoke some critical questions of their own.
